PITTSBURGH, February 13, 2012 - FASTTAC®, an industry leader in simplifying the complexities of drawing distribution, control and collaboration in the A/E/C and Facilities Management industries, presented in the CSI Albuquerque and AGC NM Building Branch Seminar titled, "Paperless and Beyond, Construction Documents of the Future".
Ray Steeb joined Bob Weygant, President of Sumex Design, Inc., to provide a glimpse into the next generation of digital solutions to the A/E/C market space. Mr. Steeb spoke of the digital potential of various solutions including that provided by FASTTAC, inc. and Mr. Weygant spoke of the design aspects related to BIM standards used today and what may, will and should be used in the future.
Attendees explored the concepts behind creating and leveraging a Building Information Model (BIM) for ongoing project management from Schematic Design through Facilities Management. Tools and techniques for managing information were discussed with the audience with ideas on how the future may unfold. While it is likely that not every office uses every method or process, it was made clear that office efficiency and project workflow would be improved even if only single ideas are captured and shared by the audience members.
The presentation also acquainted attendees with the issues surrounding the age old problem of getting "everyone on the same page" through improvement in the distribution of project drawings and documents. Today's solutions in the AEC Industry uses a combination of paper, CD’s, FTP sites, Plan Rooms and hybrids of these methods to “distribute” project information such as drawings, specifications, updates, submittals, equipment cuts, and shop drawings to the project’s owner, designer, construction manager/ general contractor, subcontractors, sub‐subcontractors, and material suppliers. The discussion around these methodologies indicated that each had problems handling this task when used alone, now several are used in combination to really complicate matters. Attendees identified the advantages of each system, its challenges, and solutions that will provide a better information flow on construction projects…known as achieving their digital potential.
"All of the participants knew what to questions to ask themselves and of their potential solution provider when the forum concluded," commented Mr. Steeb at the end of the session. "What we really wanted to do was create an environment of understanding where the attendees' company currently is, where it can go and most importantly, what they need to do to get there!"
